The family was a pioneer of promoting Islam in the country until the claiming of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and formation of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The family originally hailed from what is nowadays Uzbekistan, with the great ancestor of the line being a member and descendant of the Mughal Barlas tribe.〔Adil Hussain Khan. At the time of Mirza Ghulam Murtaza, the father of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, Maharaja Ranjit Singh offered him five villages. First he had to take allegiance with the Sikh Army. After the defeat of Sikh by the British, in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he sided with British Army.
